PARTNERING FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE
The iLembe Chamber Woman in Business forum was established this year with the vision of becoming a catalyst of new innovative ideas, projects and networking opportunities - with a significant objective of empowering and uplifting woman of all ages, social and economic stature. The forum will also strive for positive change and have a direct impact on the improvement of our local economy and community development.
Early Childhood Development sets the foundation for a child’s education, well-being and provides the cornerstone for a successful future. We cannot ignore the fact that Children’s futures are under threat, thus the iLembe Chamber and TREE signed an MOU in September 2013, partnering to implement a three-year development program that will benefit 21 crèches. TREE and The iLembe Chamber of Commerce compiled a strategy and implementation plan to improve the holistic development of children and to uplift the iLembe community at large, focusing on the KwaDukuza District in particular. We have identified the Crèches in critical need for immediate attention
This three-year plan will be a platform for the community to take over a sustainable, working development strategy for children.
Speaking at the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Forum luncheon on 13 November at Hotel Izulu, Bertha Magoge, TREE Director, highlights why this partnership is so vital - “The plight of children in our surrounding communities is dire and can no longer be ignored. The employment rate in this community shows that 90% earn below the poverty line (R1600) with 61% being unemployed, these high levels of poverty compromise child care severely. We have to collaborate to make a tangible difference for many children in need in our province and country. Children born today will be 18 come 2030 and we must ask ourselves: What future does South Africa promise them?”
“This partnership allows us to have a unified response to the needs of the children and community and ensures that we make the best use of the little resources we have. The initial three year process allows enough time to develop the community and practitioner while making a sustainable impact on the children”, says ilembe Chamber of Commerce CEO, Trenley Tilbrook.
